the brief.
Use your understanding of typographic formatting, page composition and layout to explore advanced typographic setting, workflow and content editing across print and digital platforms.
my approach.
This project was an opportunity to explore composition through print, employing a range of typesetting, typography, imagery and graphic design tools. I pushed myself to combine my knowledge of fundamental design principles, elements and processes with more complex typesetting skills. Previously, I had only just scratched the surface of the potential of design programs and tools, but this project provided a clear step-by-step to embracing InDesign and its many functions. My goals were to fulfil the brief beyond expectations, push the boundaries of my creativity and be open to constructive criticism - each one being a step towards growth.
My final design utilises core design and publication principles to tell the story of Paula Scher - her accomplishments, artistic approach to design and legacy. Learning about Scher motivated me to gain a deeper understanding of the technical side of design to play inside and outside these rules. Intentionality was important in these decisions and directions. Kristin Cullen reminds designers that composition invites the viewer into - and cultivates their relationship with - the design. I reminded myself of the rich history of design and groundbreakers like Scher to link the technical with the emotional through every step, resulting in my final layout.
