Wayfinding System Design
A Torrens University project by Grace Anne Bobadilla
The Brief
Research and analyse an existing wayfinding system within a public space, then design and present a solution for the wayfinding system.
My Approach
Each element in this wayfinding system – the branding, information, environment, layout and components – has been meticulously considered and crafted prioritising Lighthouse Church’s user experience and needs. The Lighthouse Church campus has grown steadily over the
years and its needs change rapidly. I audited the current space and developed a holistic understanding of others’ experiences when approaching and navigating the church campus, finding gaps in the current system. There were inconsistencies and inadequacies, particularly in common pathways, high-traffic areas and Kids spaces, from which I listed key objectives for my proposal. This inspired my research for effective wayfinding approaches, leading to the final concept development: a user-centred system of signs, graphics, symbols, branding, sensory elements and inclusivity.
Ultimately, this new wayfinding system reflects Lighthouse Church’s vision to “welcome all home and equip people
to navigate life.” I approached every stage of the design process prioritising the user. User-centric design is a catalyst in the transformation of wayfinding, elevating it beyond its conventional constraints to a multifaceted integration of architecture, digital interfaces, and psychological insights. Moving forward, I recommend regular user feedback channels to guide the system’s ongoing updates and maintenance. This, combined with the wayfinding foundation set in this proposal, will carry navigation around and within the church campus for years to come.
